Nothing happened until about 35 minutes in, when hearing shifted unmistakably: high frequencies dulled and every tone dropped in pitch, making voices sound like a badly tuned radio and turning ordinary sounds strange. Music became discordant even though single notes seemed normal, while speech comprehension stayed intact. Vision, taste, smell, appetite, vital signs and coordination were untouched; effects faded from four hours and were gone by eight, followed by mild digestive upset.
