For the first two to three hours everything took on a comic cast, with faces appearing as caricatures and oncoming cars seeming to have personalities of their own. The author felt a profound tenderness toward small things such as stones, flowers, and insects, and sensed that deliberately harming anything had become impossible. Color perception was the highlight: subtle shade differences were hugely amplified, muted tones glowed, and saturated colors were fringed with cascading new hues.
