After an initial bout of nausea, colors intensified and textures of fabric, concrete, and plants changed dramatically. Ordinary street life struck the author as an absurd staged comedy, prompting an urge to laugh uncontrollably, and a car ride produced a moment of transcendent joy when a familiar building briefly seemed to become a sunny Italian scene. Later the ground appeared as an intricate stone mosaic that began to writhe and resolved into the patterned skin of an enormous, beautiful serpent underfoot, which felt pleasing rather than frightening. The arrival of strangers triggered the first flash of paranoia and a strong wish to leave.
